I've begun to wonder what an McCain/Obama debate is going to sound like given Obama's gaffe-a-day handling of a presidential campaign. In this video of a Keyes/Obama debate from the Illinois U.S. senate race of 2004, Obama is asked, "Sen. Obama you say you're a Christian, but Ambassador Keyes said that your record runs counter to Jesus' teachings. What's your reaction to your opponents assertion that your own lord and saviour wouldn't even vote for you?" Observe and listen to his response.
A Christian, a true believer, wouldn't have to ask Jesus if they were "going up or down", they'd already know. That idea of question is just to buy time during the response until he can arrive at what he wants to say. Notice he can't even say the words "heaven" or "hell". He gets around to the issue of talking to Jesus and stumbles over his words. Telling, very telling. Then he says he doesn't think it appropriate for him, as a public servant, to assume his faith is absolute, before he finally arrives at his agenda. His apologetic idea of faith not being absolute is to placate the atheist/agnostic crowd, but only makes him more pitiful.
Keyes, on the other hand, as eloquent as he always is on issues of the faith, has it right. Any true believer in Christ has already settled the issue of salvation for themselves. The real question is how to apply faith in Christ and to honor Christ in handling the issues of the country, and Keyes does it with his usual aplomb.
Obama knows how to talk from a prepared speech, but doesn't know how to handle his mouth publicly otherwise.
For if the trumpet makes an uncertain sound, who will prepare himself for battle? So likewise you, unless you utter by the tongue words easy to understand, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air. - 1 Corinthians 14:8,9
